HECKART COMMUNITY CENTER

On August 6, 2019, Sedalia voters had the opportunity to vote on 2 ballot issues that would allow the Heckart Community Center to be built.  We are happy to announce that both ballot issues passed and work has begun to move this project forward. The facility will be multi-purpose and include an indoor aquatic facility, community center rooms, convention space, basketball/volleyball/pickleball courts, a fitness area, party rooms, child watch area, an indoor playground, and will be the home of the Sedalia Senior Center.

Sedalia Parks and Recreation is excited to announce we are accepting SilverSneakers, OnePass, and RenewActive memberships! Through these programs, the Heckart Community Center will now offer older adults a way to increase their levels of physical activity while motivating them to remain active.

SilverSneakers and Renew Active help older adults take greater control of their health through a variety of fitness offerings that engages participants in more frequent strength training, aerobic, and flexibility exercise by providing access to a variety of venues and programming designed specifically for older adults. There are more than 14.5 million people eligible for these benefits through leading Medicare Advantage health plans, Medicare Supplement carriers, and group retiree plans. For those members, the benefit is offered at no additional cost.

Why locate it at the original Jennie Jaynes Stadium property?

The location is central to Sedalia with great visibility for those coming in and out of town on a daily basis. Also, the original goal of the Jennie Jaynes Foundation was to provide recreation to the community. This community center is continuing the legacy of the foundation.

How will the Heckart Community Center be paid for?

The City of Sedalia will utilize a bond to pay for the community center. The principle payments to repay the bond will be made utilizing proceeds from the 1/8 cent sales tax and the Capital Improvements Tax. The interest will be paid as a contribution to the project by Sue Heckart.

What is Sue Heckart’s contribution to this project?

Sue Heckart is bringing her parents’ dream of a community center in Sedalia to life with her extremely generous donation of paying the interest on the bonds the city will use to build of the center. Without her generosity, the community center would not come to reality.

Who is going to be able to use the Center?

Anyone and everyone will be able to use the community center, whether they live in the city, county or are visiting from out of town.

Who will benefit from the Community Center?

Everyone. This Community Center will be utilized by our senior population, youth, teens, families and citizens of all ages.

How will the Center be maintained?

The Sedalia Parks Department will operate and maintain the center. Operational costs will be covered by user fees. These fees have been researched thoroughly to ensure that they are fair and comparable to other communities and so the community center can operate efficiently and meet the needs of the community.

Will we have to pay to use the facility?

Yes. Just as the Parks department currently runs all their other facilities there will be a minimal user fee to help pay for the operating expenses of the facility through user fees, rentals, and concessions. Thorough research has been done to ensure that fees are equal or less than community centers in Columbia, Warrensburg, Harrisonville, Belton, and other comparable cities. Discounts will be available for senior citizens and annual memberships. Users are also able to pay by the day.

What will happen to Convention Hall?

Convention Hall will continue to be used by Sedalia Parks and Recreation with camps, rentals, dance, gymnastics, dog obedience, and other programming. It will not be torn down.

How and why has the Senior Center been incorporated into the facility/complex?

The Senior Center is an important asset for the citizens of our community. Including it in the Community Center will provide a modern facility, in a convenient location, with great access and help to create a well-rounded community center for all. It also allows those utilizing the senior center access to additional services the community center provides. This will also allow for a state of the art kitchen to allow the Senior Center to continue to provide meals within the facility and their home delivery to senior citizens within all of Pettis County.

Can 3 adults be on the same membership?
No, additional adults will have to purchase an individual membership based on their age.
Family membership is a maximum of 5 members with no more than 2 adults.

Are fitness classes included in my membership?
We are still working on those details. Some classes will be included and some will cost extra. Same for Aquatics or Pool Classes – they will be offered but some will be included and some will cost extra.

Do I have to pay to use the walking track?
No, the indoor track at the Heckart Community Center will be made available for free for all community members. Non-members of the Heckart Community Center will be required to check in at the front desk and will be issued a colored wrist band which must be worn for the entire duration when utilizing the track. The wrist band only allows use of the track. Laps per mile are 9 laps.

Heckart Community Center – Facility Rentals

We will being taking reservations for rentals at the Heckart Community Center on February 1, 2022. The first day an event can be hosted at the Heckart Community Center will be March 25, 2022. Please email rentals@sedaliaparks.com for questions or to set up a rental on February 1, 2022.

Will my insurance cover my membership?
We are looking into options for this type of service. Check back with us as we gather more details.

When will you start hiring staff for the Heckart Community Center?
Applications for part time positions such as Front Desk Attendants, Child Watch / Kids Zone, Fitness Center Attendants, Janitorial/Maintenance, Lifeguards, Fitness Instructors, etc will be made available at the first of the year -January 3, 2022. Applications will be available for pick up at Convention Hall. Watch our Facebook page or website for details.

Sensory Friendly Play Time

There will be no sensory playtime September 17th – October 1st. Playtime will resume on Wednesdays starting October 5th.

Tiny Tots

Tiny Tots will run through April 30th, 2023. Tiny Tots does not meet during the summer and resumes in the fall.

Open to those kiddos who have not entered school, ages 5 and younger. Toddlers can ride, slide, and climb on our indoor pre-school playground set up just for them. Parents must supervise their own children during this special play group.

At the Heckart Community Center we offer personal training. Sessions can be purchased for an individual or small groups. Group personal training does not offer individualized training, but rather training together as a group. Great for accountability among friends! Thorough research has been done to ensure that fees are equal or less than community centers in Columbia, Warrensburg, Harrisonville, Belton, and other comparable cities. Discounts will be available for senior citizens and annual memberships. Users are also able to pay by the day.

What will happen to Convention Hall?

Convention Hall will continue to be used by Sedalia Parks and Recreation with camps, rentals, dance, gymnastics, dog obedience, and other programming. It will not be torn down.

How and why has the Senior Center been incorporated into the facility/complex?

The Senior Center is an important asset for the citizens of our community. Including it in the Community Center will provide a modern facility, in a convenient location, with great access and help to create a well-rounded community center for all. It also allows those utilizing the senior center access to additional services the community center provides. This will also allow for a state of the art kitchen to allow the Senior Center to continue to provide meals within the facility and their home delivery to senior citizens within all of Pettis County.

Can 3 adults be on the same membership?
No, additional adults will have to purchase an individual membership based on their age.
Family membership is a maximum of 5 members with no more than 2 adults.

Example: Family membership could include a maximum of 2 adults and 3 children up to age 18. Or a single adult with 4 children up to age 18. All people must be residing under the same household.

Are fitness classes included in my membership?
We are still working on those details. Some classes will be included and some will cost extra. Same for Aquatics or Pool Classes – they will be offered but some will be included and some will cost extra.

Do I have to pay to use the walking track?
No, the indoor track at the Heckart Community Center will be made available for free for all community members. Non-members of the Heckart Community Center will be required to check in at the front desk and will be issued a colored wrist band which must be worn for the entire duration when utilizing the track. The wrist band only allows use of the track. Laps per mile are 9 laps.

Heckart Community Center – Facility Rentals

We will being taking reservations for rentals at the Heckart Community Center on February 1, 2022. The first day an event can be hosted at the Heckart Community Center will be March 25, 2022. Please email rentals@sedaliaparks.com for questions or to set up a rental on February 1, 2022.

Will my insurance cover my membership?
We are looking into options for this type of service. Check back with us as we gather more details.

When will you start hiring staff for the Heckart Community Center?
Applications for part time positions such as Front Desk Attendants, Child Watch / Kids Zone, Fitness Center Attendants, Janitorial/Maintenance, Lifeguards, Fitness Instructors, etc will be made available at the first of the year -January 3, 2022. Applications will be available for pick up at Convention Hall. Watch our Facebook page or website for details.

There will be no sensory playtime September 17th – October 1st. Playtime will resume on Wednesdays starting October 5th.

Heckart Community Center

This time will provide children and families with varying abilities the opportunity to enjoy play time in a sensory friendly and safe environment!  This program is included in a Heckart Community Center membership or the daily pass. This is NOT a drop off program – an adult must stay with the child during play time.

Tiny Tots will run through April 30th, 2023. Tiny Tots does not meet during the summer and resumes in the fall.

Open to those kiddos who have not entered school, ages 5 and younger. Toddlers can ride, slide, and climb on our indoor pre-school playground set up just for them. Parents must supervise their own children during this special play group.

Ages 6 months through 12 years. Child Watch provides a stimulating environment for your child to explore and interact with other children while you enjoy the benefits of the Heckart Community Center.

  •  $2 per day for members/$5 per day for non-members

  • Operates on a drop-in basis; first come, first serve
  • Attendant to child ratio: 1 to 5 for children ages 6 months to 2 years and 1 to 10 for children ages 3-12 years
  • Child Watch is limited to a maximum of 2 hours
  • Parents/Guardians must remain in the Heckart Community Center facility
  • Space is limited due to staff to child ratios. When the area is full, it may be necessary to wait until a space is vacated.
  • At this time we are not taking reservations for Child Watch.
  • Ages 6 months-5 years old are only allowed in the Child Watch area.
  • Ages 6-12 years are allowed in the Child Watch area.

Need to burn off some energy? Check out our indoor playground! This area is open daily for children. To use this area, children must have adult supervision at all times and socks.

At the Heckart Community Center we offer personal training. Sessions can be purchased for an individual or small groups. Group personal training does not offer individualized training, but rather training together as a group. Great for accountability among friends!
