HECKART COMMUNITY CENTER

On August 6, 2019, Sedalia voters had the opportunity to vote on 2 ballot issues that would allow the Heckart Community Center to be built.  We are happy to announce that both ballot issues passed and work has begun to move this project forward. The facility will be multi-purpose and include an indoor aquatic facility, community center rooms, convention space, basketball/volleyball/pickleball courts, a fitness area, party rooms, child watch area, an indoor playground, and will be the home of the Sedalia Senior Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why locate it at the original Jennie Jaynes Stadium property?

The location is central to Sedalia with great visibility for those coming in and out of town on a daily basis. Also, the original goal of the Jennie Jaynes Foundation was to provide recreation to the community. This community center is continuing the legacy of the foundation.

How will the Heckart Community Center be paid for?

The City of Sedalia will utilize a bond to pay for the community center. The principle payments to repay the bond will be made utilizing proceeds from the 1/8 cent sales tax and the Capital Improvements Tax. The interest will be paid as a contribution to the project by Sue Heckart.

What is Sue Heckart’s contribution to this project?

Sue Heckart is bringing her parents’ dream of a community center in Sedalia to life with her extremely generous donation of paying the interest on the bonds the city will use to build of the center. Without her generosity, the community center would not come to reality.

Who is going to be able to use the Center?

Anyone and everyone will be able to use the community center, whether they live in the city, county or are visiting from out of town.

Who will benefit from the Community Center?

Everyone. This Community Center will be utilized by our senior population, youth, teens, families and citizens of all ages.

How will the Center be maintained?

The Sedalia Parks Department will operate and maintain the center. Operational costs will be covered by user fees. These fees have been researched thoroughly to ensure that they are fair and comparable to other communities and so the community center can operate efficiently and meet the needs of the community.

Will we have to pay to use the facility?

Yes. Just as the Parks department currently runs all their other facilities there will be a minimal user fee to help pay for the operating expenses of the facility through user fees, rentals, and concessions. Thorough research has been done to ensure that fees are equal or less than community centers in Columbia, Warrensburg, Harrisonville, Belton, and other comparable cities. Discounts will be available for senior citizens and annual memberships. Users are also able to pay by the day.

What will happen to Convention Hall?

Convention Hall will continue to be used by Sedalia Parks and Recreation with camps, rentals, dance, gymnastics, dog obedience, and other programming. It will not be torn down.

How and why has the Senior Center been incorporated into the facility/complex?

The Senior Center is an important asset for the citizens of our community. Including it in the Community Center will provide a modern facility, in a convenient location, with great access and help to create a well-rounded community center for all. It also allows those utilizing the senior center access to additional services the community center provides. This will also allow for a state of the art kitchen to allow the Senior Center to continue to provide meals within the facility and their home delivery to senior citizens within all of Pettis County.

Can 3 adults be on the same membership?
No, additional adults will have to purchase an individual membership based on their age.
Family membership is a maximum of 5 members with no more than 2 adults.

Example: Family membership could include a maximum of 2 adults and 3 children up to age 18. Or a single adult with 4 children up to age 18. All people must be residing under the same household.

Are fitness classes included in my membership?
We are still working on those details. Some classes will be included and some will cost extra. Same for Aquatics or Pool Classes – they will be offered but some will be included and some will cost extra.

Do I have to pay to use the walking track?
No, the indoor track at the Heckart Community Center will be made available for free for all community members. Non-members of the Heckart Community Center will be required to check in at the front desk and will be issued a colored wrist band which must be worn for the entire duration when utilizing the track. The wrist band only allows use of the track. Laps per mile are 9 laps.

Heckart Community Center – Facility Rentals

When will you start hiring staff for the Heckart Community Center?
Applications for part time positions such as Front Desk Attendants, Child Watch / Kids Zone, Fitness Center Attendants, Janitorial/Maintenance, Lifeguards, Fitness Instructors, etc will be made available at the first of the year -January 3, 2022. FITNESS CENTER RULES
1. Before beginning a new fitness routine, Sedalia Parks & Recreation encourages all participants to consult with their physician.
2. Proper fitness attire is required at all times, which includes closed-toe athletic shoes (no sandals, work boots or slip-on shoes), shirts (no sports bras or half-shirts- shirts must cover the full torso), proper shorts or sweat pants (no jeans, jean shorts, belts, pants with buttons, snaps, zippers or rivets).
3. Due to the inherent risks involved in using fitness training equipment, you must be 16 years of age for all fitness training areas; this includes all weight training and cardiovascular equipment within these areas.
4. Youth age births to 9 years of age (with exception of youth programming sponsored by Sedalia Parks & Recreation) are not allowed on the fitness floor or the weight/cardio equipment.
5. Youth ages 10-12 may utilize fitness equipment, if directly supervised by a parent or guardian, after completion of the Youth Fitness Orientation and must wear an orange wristband to be checked out from fitness attendant desk.
6. Youth ages 13-15 are eligible to use the Fitness Center after completion of the Youth Fitness Orientation and must wear an orange wristband to be checked out from fitness attendant desk.
7. All fitness equipment must be returned to appropriate storage locations after use (i.e. weights must be re-racked).
8. Machines must be wiped down after each use.
9. All equipment must remain in the Fitness Center. No equipment is permitted for use in hallways or gymnasium.
10. The use of chalk is prohibited.
11. Dumbbells or other weights are not allowed on cardio equipment.
12. If weights, pulleys or other parts become jammed, users should not attempt to free them without staff assistance. Report the problem to the Fitness Attendant.
13. Muddy, dirty or excessively wet shoes are not allowed in the Fitness Center.
14. Dropping of weights is prohibited.
15. Be respectful- screaming, yelling, excessive grunting or use of profane language is prohibited.
16. 30 minute time limit on cardiovascular equipment while others are waiting.
17. Weight belts are not permitted on benches or any upholstered equipment.
18. Collars must be used when working out with barbells to ensure weights do not fall.
19. Gym etiquette provides that you allow other guests to work-in if doing more than one set on a piece of strength equipment.
20. Sedalia Parks & Recreation is not responsible for personal belongings. Please lock all personal belongings in a locker.
21. Food is not permitted in the Fitness Center area; Drinks are permitted in approved closed containers.
22. Personal trainers, not approved by Sedalia Parks & Recreation, may not provide their services at the Heckart Community Center. Anyone participating in a personal training session not associated with Sedalia Parks & Recreation approved Personal Trainer may be ejected from the facility and have their membership revoked with no refund. Non-members and their trainers may be ejected from the facility permanently.
23. Failure to comply with any of the posted Fitness Center or Sedalia Parks & Recreation rules may result in suspension and/or permanent ejection.

10. The use of chalk is prohibited.
11. Dumbbells or other weights are not allowed on cardio equipment.
12. If weights, pulleys or other parts become jammed, users should not attempt to free them without staff assistance. Report the problem to the Fitness Attendant.
13. Muddy, dirty or excessively wet shoes are not allowed in the Fitness Center.
14. Dropping of weights is prohibited.
15. Be respectful- screaming, yelling, excessive grunting or use of profane language is prohibited.
16. 30 minute time limit on cardiovascular equipment while others are waiting.
17. Weight belts are not permitted on benches or any upholstered equipment.
18. Collars must be used when working out with barbells to ensure weights do not fall.
19. Gym etiquette provides that you allow other guests to work-in if doing more than one set on a piece of strength equipment.
20. Sedalia Parks & Recreation is not responsible for personal belongings. Please lock all personal belongings in a locker.
21. Food is not permitted in the Fitness Center area; Drinks are permitted in approved closed containers.
22. Personal trainers, not approved by Sedalia Parks & Recreation, may not provide their services at the Heckart Community Center. Anyone participating in a personal training session not associated with Sedalia Parks & Recreation approved Personal Trainer may be ejected from the facility and have their membership revoked with no refund. Non-members and their trainers may be ejected from the facility permanently.
23. Failure to comply with any of the posted Fitness Center or Sedalia Parks & Recreation rules may result in suspension and/or permanent ejection.
